Celebrate Día de los Muertos in Downtown Denison
Start your Denison getaway with a celebration full of color, culture, music, and community! The Denison Arts Council’s annual Día de los Muertos celebration brings the rich traditions of Mexican heritage to life on November 7, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. at Heritage Park on Main St., in Downtown Denison, TX. Whether you’re drawn to lively performances, unique artwork, or the chance to experience and learn about something new, this festive gathering offers a memorable way to begin your weekend.
Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a Mexican holiday that honors loved ones who have passed away. Through vibrant ofrendas, or altars, decorated with treasured mementos, families celebrate the lasting bonds of love and remembrance. The Denison Arts Council’s festival shares the meaning behind these traditions while providing a welcoming space for visitors to celebrate and enjoy the talents of artists and performers with Mexican heritage.
There’s plenty to see and enjoy throughout the day! The main stage will feature an energetic mix of cultural dance performances, live music, and other local talent. Performing artists include folkloric, Aztec, and Mayan dancers, mariachi music, and a concert by Grupo Morros. You can browse vendor booths offering original art and holiday-inspired merchandise. At 2:00 p.m., join the excitement as the festival parade brings colorful costumes and spirited celebrations to the streets.
Giant Puppets, Big Personalities
One of the parade’s most captivating features is the mojigangas—towering, larger-than-life puppets that bring a touch of magic to the celebration. Over the past 15 years, each of the Denison Arts Council’s giant puppets has been carefully handcrafted by local artists, art students, and volunteers. Each has its own personality and story, adding creativity and a special sense of tradition to a festival that continues to grow each year.
Following the parade, at 2:30 p.m. the festivities continue with a costume contest celebrating the colorful traditions of Día de los Muertos. Traditional attire often features the iconic figures of La Catrina (the elegant skeleton) and El Catrín (the dapper skeleton), vibrant symbolic colors, and intricate sugar-skull-inspired face painting.
With performances and activities continuing into the afternoon, it’s easy to spend a few hours soaking up the festive atmosphere.

The celebration extends beyond Heritage Park, too. Murals and Sculptures with a Story
Start your art walk at Frontier Denison, located at 200 W. Main. Painted in 1987 by Vicki Roberson, this large, vintage Western scene brings a touch of frontier spirit to downtown. Artist Minerva Dirzo Brito restored the mural in 2019, giving this longtime landmark a fresh lease on life.
History takes center stage in two murals honoring President Dwight D. Eisenhower, whose connection to Denison is an important part of the city’s history. At the corner of W. Chestnut and S. Burnett, you’ll find a classic black-and-white portrait of Eisenhower painted by Denison High School graduate Steven Ray Bohall. Just down the street at 130 W. Main, national muralist ARCY created the massive Eisenhower Leadership Mural, using spray paint to bring a smiling Ike to life in just a few days.
Another mural celebrates a remarkable aviation story with a local connection. Located at 400 W. Main, the Sully Sullenberger & Flight 1549 mural was completed in 2020 by local artist Sydney Sbarbaro Metcalf. The artwork pays tribute to Denison native Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger and the “Miracle on the Hudson,” when he safely landed a disabled plane on the river, saving all 155 people aboard.
For a different kind of artistic landmark, look for the Big Red Guitar Sculpture at the corner of W. Main and Burnett. Created by Casni Studio, this larger-than-life metal guitar celebrates Denison’s musical history and Music on Main, the city’s annual summer concert series. It’s a fitting tribute to the power of music to bring a community together!
These are just a few examples of the public art waiting to be discovered around downtown Denison. Make your own adventure with a self-paced tour using the Public Art Guide Brochure or the Public Art Walk Interactive Map.
