Who Was Doc Holliday?
Born John Henry Holliday in 1851, Doc Holliday was a trained dentist who later became a gambler, gunslinger, and close associate of Wyatt Earp. While he’s best known for his role in the gunfight at the O.K. Corral, Holliday’s story began far from the headlines—in towns like Denison, where he first tried to make a living practicing dentistry.
Doc Holliday’s Time in Denison
Doc Holliday began his career as a dentist in Atlanta in 1872, but shortly after opening his practice, he was diagnosed with tuberculosis—a turning point that would shape the rest of his life. Seeking relief in a drier climate, he moved west and established a dental practice in Dallas, Texas, in March of 1873. However, his persistent cough made it difficult to maintain patients, and he soon turned to gambling as his primary source of income.
Fully aware that his illness would likely shorten his life, Holliday developed a reputation as a skilled and fearless card player—one who was quick to take offense and unafraid of confrontation. On January 1, 1875, he was arrested in Dallas after exchanging gunfire with a saloon keeper. Though neither man was injured, Holliday was fined for the incident and soon after relocated his dental practice to Denison, a booming railroad hub and a key stop along the Chisholm Trail, drawing cowboys, travelers, and entrepreneurs from across the country.
During his time in Denison, Holliday continued both his dental work and gambling pursuits. However, after being found guilty and fined for illegal gambling in 1875, he chose to leave Texas altogether. He spent time in the Dakota and Colorado territories before eventually returning to the Lone Star State. It was in Fort Griffin, Texas, in 1877 that Holliday would meet Wyatt Earp—marking the beginning of one of the most legendary partnerships of the American West.
