What is the Great American Main Street Award?
The Great American Main Street Award is the most prestigious award a downtown district can receive. Since its inception in 1995, only 112 communities have been recognized, making this a rare and momentous achievement. Each year, Main Street America selects winners based on their outstanding work in transforming their historic downtowns through economic growth, community engagement, and preservation efforts. The selection process is rigorous, with a national jury evaluating applicants based on their commitment to historic preservation, innovation, cross-sector partnerships, and inclusivity.
The Journey to Revitalization
Downtown Denison’s transformation is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our community. As one of the first Main Street programs in Texas, established in 1989, we have spent decades investing in our historic buildings, fostering economic growth, and making our downtown more accessible and inclusive. Our pedestrian-friendly streetscape, ADA-accessible seating, and sensory-friendly accommodations at public events have helped make Downtown Denison a place for everyone to enjoy.
Through strategic initiatives like our Façade Grant Program, we successfully removed 100% of slipcovers from buildings along Main Street, unveiling the historic charm of our grand multi-story structures. Over the years, Downtown Denison has witnessed hundreds of building rehabilitations, proving our commitment to preserving the past while building for the future. People are drawn to our beautiful, photogenic downtown with buildings of impressive size and scale for a city our size; however, it is our amazing business owners’ charm that keeps them coming back.
